Integrated Sensing and Communications: the Past and the way to Future

Panel List: Natalia Nikolova,Narcis Cardona,Guangxu Zhu,Guangjian Wang

The emerging 6G system will explore the new spectrum and open new possibilities for the integrated sensing and communications. These deployed radio transceivers naturally form a ubiquitous sensing network that could extract environment information from the wireless signals. Therefore, sensing functionality can be deployed quickly and cheaply into the existing or next-generation cellular network.  ISAC has thus become an attractive research area as important part of the future technologies trend of terrestrial IMT systems. In the past two years, the 1st and 2nd THz-ISAC workshop was organized during PIMRC 2021 and 2022. From fundamental theories to component and system design, various applications of integrated sensing and communication technology in terahertz field have been demonstrated and studied by researcher from global. And further theoretical evolution and research efforts on practical verification are needed to overcome the challenge of this technology. For these reasons, it is still timely and necessary to organize ISAC workshop to unite the effort from both academia and industry to keep moving forward the research in this area.
